Be yourself, for yourself

No matter what, Just Do It

Ahead of International Women’s Day, Nike has released commercial celebrating athletes from the Middle East. Not just any athlete, but rather women athletes.  In a part of the world that is infamous for its regressive laws against women, being a woman sportsperson from the region is a hard task.

The commercial titled ‘What will they say about you’ is actually centered on the same phrase that women who dare have to listen to every day.  Shot beautifully, the commercial points out the kind of looks women receive whenever they break the mold.

It starts with a woman wearing a hijab running on the streets where in others look at her either curiously or disapprovingly. With an Arabic voiceover, it shows women engaging in various sports like fencing, swimming, wrestling, ice skating etc. While they take up different sports, one thing remains constant, the dialogue what will people say.

But Nike and all these women have only one motto- no matter what they say, do what you love and want.

“What will they say about you? Maybe they’ll say you exceeded all expectations,” a voice narrates in Arabic. And that is all that matters.

The women featured in the commercial are-parkour trainer Amal Murad, from the UAE; ice skater Zahra Lari, from the UAE; singer Balquees Fathi, from UAE/Saudi Arabia; fencer Ines Boubakri from Tunisia; and Jordanian boxer Arifa Bseiso.
